P&W provided us with this release on their GTF engine: “Pratt & Whitney’s carbon seal improvement package received certification April 12 and is being deployed to our customers. These changes are designed to improve the carbon seal’s durability for PW1100G-JM engines on the A320neo fleet. We are working closely with our customers to drive implementation of these enhancements while we continue to support them in their daily operations.”

The focus of the work is on the #3 bearing compartment of the engine.  Apparently, the work can be done quickly and combines some hardware and software fixes.  Note the fix applies only to the A320neo version of the engine.  The C Series version of the engine has not shown similar problems even though P&W requested customers to check their engines.   We will monitor operations to see how this impacts the various airlines using the A320neo.
