Here Comes An Aerospace Window Shortage |

In late May, GKN Aerospace halted production at its window factory in suburban Los Angeles, after an overheating tank raised fears of an explosion serious enough to evacuate 50,000 nearby residents for several days. The factory has since partially reopened. Parent company Melrose Industries says it's working to restore full production by the end of 2026 — meaning close to seven months of reduced output from one of the world's largest suppliers of cockpit and passenger windows. Boeing told operators to replace windows only when necessary, not for cosmetic reasons — active rationing, confirmed in Boeing's communication to airlines. The company says it "continues to work with our supplier and are taking steps to mitigate any potential impacts." Why This Supplier Touches Almost Everything GKN's window and transparency business isn't a niche single-program supplier. Its customer list covers the 737 MAX and 787 on the Boeing side; the A220 and A350 on the Airbus side; Bombardier's Global 8000; and multiple Embraer platforms. A tank overheating in one Los Angeles-area factory is now a live constraint touching nearly every wide-body and narrowbody program running today, at exactly the moment several of them — the MAX in particular, just after MAX 7 certification — are trying to ramp production, not hold it steady. The Aftermarket Is Compounding It An AlixPartners aerospace and defense partner put the dynamic plainly: windows have a significant aftermarket, so the demand hitting GKN right now isn't just new-production OEMs— it's every MRO shop needing replacement windows to keep existing aircraft flying. That's the same structural pattern you've now seen with engines all summer: new-build demand and aftermarket/repair demand competing for the same finite output, at the same supplier, at the same time. One analyst went further, explicitly describing this window shortage as "echoing engine shortages" — the exact phrase, applied to a completely different part of the airplane. The Embraer Connection Nobody's Made Yet Here's the piece that connects straight back to our Rolls-Royce/Embraer/JetZero coverage from two weeks ago. Embraer had already been dealing with window supply constraints before this GKN incident — Flexjet chairman Kenn Ricci said in February that windows were a real problem for Embraer's supply chain, specifically citing them as part of why Embraer deliveries have been slipping. At the time, we along with most of the industry focused on engines — PW1900G supply, CFM/PW backlogs, the propulsion side of Embraer's competitive position. Windows were sitting there the whole time as a second, quieter constraint on the same delivery schedule. The GKN factory incident doesn't create that problem for Embraer; it makes an existing one worse, right as Embraer's own delivery slots were supposed to be its structural advantage over Airbus and Boeing. Airbus's A220 Line Is the One to Watch Airbus has already experienced A220 window shortages, though sources say it hasn't delayed production yet — key word "yet." The A220 is the same program at the center of the Air France-KLM capacity-cut piece we just ran, where a slowdown in short-haul demand was the story. If GKN's window constraint tightens further before the factory returns to full production, it's worth watching whether that becomes the actual delivery-limiting factor on the A220 line, independent of whatever AF-KLM or any other customer wants on the demand side. Bottom Line This is the same story we've been tracking since Rate 75 and the North Line — production capacity constrained not by final assembly, but by a supplier several tiers down that nobody outside the industry had been watching. It's just playing out on windows instead of engines this time, and it's touching a wider spread of programs simultaneously than any single engine shortage does, because nearly every OEM buys from the same transparency supplier. Boeing says it isn't derailing production yet. Seven months is a long time for "yet" to hold, especially layered on top of an aftermarket that was already competing for the same glass before the tank overheated.
