IndiGo Leads India’s Airlines in Efficiency

In another piece of analysis using ADS-B data, we examine India's Big Four airlines. India is among the most vibrant aviation markets. The following chart illustrates India's rising impact in commercial aviation. Note the two red arrows. The upper arrow shows India trailing its peers in volumes. But the lower arrow points to a growth curve that suggests it's growing faster than China. That is a big deal. With that big picture in mind, what do we see in the data? As a reminder, this data is from a random period in 2024 as part of a sample. Our key metric is TGT (total ground time) as a proxy for how quickly an airline turns its aircraft back into service. We are showing the median TGT. Fleet TGT [caption id="attachment_95541" align="aligncenter" width="831"] ADS-B; AirInsight[/caption] The results are unexpectedly wide. SpiceJet's MAX 8 numbers are higher than its peers by a significant amount. This item warrants deeper analysis. SpiceJet According to aviation reports and company statements, SpiceJet began a phased reinstatement of some grounded aircraft in early 2025. The airline aimed to bring back four MAX 8s by mid-April 2025 as part of its broader fleet restoration plan, starting with the first re-induction on January 29, 2025. However, as of May 2025, fleet data still reflects only a single 737 MAX ?8 in active service, with the rest grounded, indicating that while reinstatement is underway, most MAX jets remain inactive. Consequently, the MAX 8 numbers reported likely apply to one aircraft and are therefore not representative. The 737-800 numbers better reflect SpiceJet's operations. IndiGo This airline demonstrates why it is the country's leader. The following chart shows this clearly. [caption id="attachment_95542" align="aligncenter" width="640"] AirInsight[/caption] Even with its breakneck fleet growth, IndiGo exploits its fleet better than its peers. It does by turning faster. The difference between it and Air India is significant. Air India averages 96 minutes across its fleet compared to 78 minutes at Indigo. That's a 19% faster TGT. That gap multiplied over hundreds of flights per week adds up quickly. Upsizing Moreover, India is seeing a steady upsizing in aircraft. Both IndiGo and Air India are moving to A321s. Akasa is moving to MAX 8-200s. The trend is easily seen in the following chart. As India's air travel market matures, it follows the same pattern we see in the US - upsizing. The first table shows that this is the case, especially for Air India. But IndiGo shows its remarkable efficiency. How good is Indigo? Here we compare with the lowest TGT times. Notice, by the way, that A321neo times are typically longer than A321ceo. We expounded on this earlier this week. Here is a helpful table summarizing the data and results. Yet it delivers faster TGTs than its peers. Akasa is competitive in terms of TGT, but lacks the critical mass for now. Air India delivers higher TGTs on fewer flights, making it relatively inefficient. This could be part of its legacy as an airline and the merger with Vistara. SpiceJet is relatively inefficient in terms of TGT and is working its way through a series of financial challenges. Summary IndiGo is India's top performer in a fast-growing market. The map shows the range of India's single-aisle aircraft. It is impressive. The size of the ball is median TGT. The biggest TGT reported is Batam, Indonesia. And the flag will likely be on an IndiGo airplane.
