LATAM Airlines Group has introduced its own global travel eSIM service, developed in partnership with Gigs. This offering positions LATAM as the first airline in Latin America to integrate mobile connectivity directly into its digital ecosystem, providing passengers with data plans and the ability to earn LATAM Pass Miles on purchases.
The initiative sees LATAM Airlines entering a market segment currently served by dedicated travel eSIM providers. By leveraging its brand and customer base, the airline aims to offer an alternative for travelers seeking mobile data access abroad.
“With eSIM LATAM, we’re extending our mission beyond flights—we’re creating a connected travel experience that goes beyond our passengers landing”, said Ramiro AlfonsĂn, Commercial VP at LATAM Airlines Group. “This launch is about removing friction, adding value, and giving travelers one less thing to worry about.”
Service Features and Availability
The eSIM LATAM service offers mobile data plans ranging from 1 GB to 10 GB, covering a variety of regional and global destinations. Key features for users include:
- LATAM Pass Miles Accrual: Passengers can earn loyalty miles with each eSIM purchase.
- Data Plans: Options for regional and global data consumption.
- Roaming Cost Avoidance: Designed to offer an alternative to traditional international roaming fees.
- Activation Process: Described as a straightforward, digital activation.
The service is currently available through latam.com. Future integrations are anticipated to expand its functionality within the airline’s digital platforms. “People turn airplane mode off before they can take their seat belts off. Connectivity is now a core part of the travel journey. LATAM Airlines has recognised that by embedding mobile services directly into their ecosystem, they’re simplifying the experience for millions of travellers—and setting a new benchmark for how airlines can turn connectivity into a strategic advantage, driving engagement, loyalty, and new revenue streams,” said Rafa Plantier, VP of Go-to-Market at Gigs.
Context in the Aviation Industry
LATAM’s move into branded eSIMs reflects a broader trend within the airline industry to diversify ancillary revenues and enhance the passenger experience through expanded service offerings. While some airlines globally have partnered with third-party providers to promote mobile connectivity solutions, LATAM’s direct integration of a branded eSIM represents a notable step in Latin America.
Gigs, a company specializing in enabling businesses to launch their own branded wireless services, facilitates the technical and operational aspects of this offering. Their platform allows companies to offer mobile services without the complexities typically associated with telecommunications infrastructure.
LATAM Airlines Group, a significant player in Latin American aviation, operates an extensive network across the continent. With major operations in countries such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, the group services a substantial passenger volume. This established footprint provides a foundation for the rollout and potential adoption of the new eSIM service among its existing customer base.
