Sun PhuQuoc’s 40 Dreamliners: Bold or Reckless?

Today's Boeing 787 order by Vietnam's Sun PhuQuoc Airways for 40 787-9s is, to say the least, interesting. The airline was founded in January 2025. Its AOC was issued in 2025. Its first commercial flight was in November 2025. The airline's fleet already consists of eight Airbus A320-family narrowbodies. The airline's parent company is Sun Group (Vietnam's major tourism/resort conglomerate). With a nod to Allegiant, their business model is "Resort Aviation" - integrating flights with Sun Group's tourism ecosystem The airline's first international route was Phu Quoc-Taipei on March 29, 2026 (5x weekly). Start My Test Flight ? Background The group's vision is essentially to transform Phu Quoc into Southeast Asia's answer to Phuket or Bali. The Phu Quoc hub is based around Phu Quoc Island. This is Vietnam's largest island, located in the Gulf of Thailand. It has a population of ~180,000, but has experienced a tourism boom. In 2025, there were 8.3 million visitors (18% above target), and international visitors amounted to 1.9 million (nearly 2x 2024), with January 2026 showing international traffic up 40% YoY. Now you can understand the 787 focus. The 787 Selection There are two aspects here: the business choice and the technical choice. We do not have any insight into the business side of the deal. But the technical aspect revolves around a key number: 7,500 miles of range. The airline has 2026 targets as Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taipei. Its future targets include the United States, the UK, France, and Germany (nonstop). The plan is to deliver these aircraft by 2030. Incidentally, the 2030 plan includes having 60 Airbus narrow bodies, too. The ambition is eye-popping. The Geopolitical Angle This order is part of a $30 billion Vietnamese aerospace shopping spree during General Secretary To Lam's US visit, including: Sun PhuQuoc: 40 Boeing 787-9s (~$22.5B) Vietnam Airlines: 50 Boeing 737-8s ($8.1B) Vietjet: six Boeing 737 MAX 8s (financing TBA) In the Trump Tariff era, this kind of deal is seen in the best possible light in Washington. Moreover, both national parties to the deal will use this to move closer together in light of China's ambitions in Asia. And then reality The dust will settle, and reality will come glaringly into focus. there big questions about this deal. 40 787-9s for an island with 180,000 residents? That's more widebodies than many major national carriers 100 aircraft by 2030 = four years to scale from 8 to 100 aircraft? Where has this ever happened? New airline (founded 2025) with zero long-haul experience, competing with established carriers (Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines) on connecting traffic. Does the Sun Group own a casino? Because the odds look tough. "Up to 40" suggests options/flexibility - likely won't take all 40. Phu Quoc seasonality (monsoon impacts summer tourism), and year-round traffic is necessary for that lift. There's heavy reliance on Chinese/Russian tourists (geopolitical risk) that gets no mention. That casino thing, again. The Air Astana Parallel: Like Air Astana's 787 order we analyzed, Sun PhuQuoc faces the geography-versus-competition challenge. Geography: Phu Quoc is well-positioned as a tropical beach destination Competition: Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur all offer better connections + established tourism infrastructure Deep pockets: Can Sun Group sustain airline losses while building market share? Boeing keeps winning This is exactly what Boeing needs right now. Another major 787 win (after Air Astana, TAAG Angola). This validates 787 program recovery and counters the Airbus A350 momentum. Moreover, it shows 787 appeal in emerging markets plus provides backlog visibility through the 2030s. Bottom Line Sun PhuQuoc's 40-aircraft 787 order is audacious, bordering on reckless, for a one-year-old airline currently operating eight narrowbodies. The bull case: Vietnam's tourism boom is real, Phu Quoc is the next Phuket, the integrated resort model captures revenue other airlines can't, and 787-9 economics make direct long-haul viable. The bear case: This is Sun Group betting billions on transforming a regional island into a global destination hub, competing against established carriers with decades of experience and far superior networks. Reality check: They'll probably take 15-20 aircraft firm, with options for the rest depending on how initial routes perform. The real test comes in 2027-2028 when long-haul routes to Europe/US launch. If it works, Sun PhuQuoc becomes the "Emirates of resort aviation." If it fails, it becomes a cautionary tale of overly ambitious expansion. For Boeing, it's a win either way—the order is signed, and even if Sun PhuQuoc only takes half, that's still 20 Dreamliners supporting production through 2030.
