US Ailrines: U.S. Airline Industry Is in Good Health

The US DOT T-100 datasets have been updated through June 2026. This update allows us to adjust our models to parse the metrics and KPIs we have been developing. Given our shift away from news and toward data and analysis, we welcome these moments and the value of US Airlines. This note is heavy on charts and tables. But that's how we peel back insights from the granular data the DOT offers. Our analysis does not address the FAA's view. Our operations analysis will address that. The Big Picture We 'lost' two airlines - Spirit and Hawaiian. The latter now files under Alaska even though it operates under its own brand. This note is reporting from the T-1 dataset. The full dataset title is: U.S. Air Carrier Traffic And Capacity Summary by Service Class. The first layer looks at traffic by airline type. The chart shows the industry is healthy. The industry average load factor is over 81%, clearly in a profitable area. Among the airlines, LCCs are the weakest. Spirit's demise may yet play out well, because since that airline closed, fares have risen. This acts like a rising tide, with the entire industry seeing better fares. US DOT; AirInsight Next, we look at each airline's relative passenger loads. The bright yellow line for Spirit will stop tracking going forward, as happened this year with Hawaiian. The Spirit exit is helping small carriers like Breeze exploit gaps, which also applies to Avelo, which is too small to report at this level. The key takeaway is that all the curves are spiking. System-wide, the average flight is at 128 passengers. US DOT; AirInsight The following chart captures another view of how each airline is performing from a traffic perspective. Each airline's average load is listed along with a sparkline, and the red dot shows the airline's high point. Seven airlines report they are now at that spot. Which is why, for the industry as a whole, the bottom line is also peaking. US DOT; AirInsight These three data points indicate the US airline industry appears to be in good shape. Consolidation (Alaska/Hawaiian) and shedding weak participants are strengthening the industry. Summary Charts What about industry KPIs? The following charts summarize some industry KPIs. These are busy, and you can enlarge them by clicking the chart. US DOT; AirInsight Bottom Line The key takeaway: flights are taking longer and going farther. This implies that smaller communities are getting less service. On the other hand, airlines are doing better as a result. Traffic is good, and load factors are in the 'green'. Even with schedule completion trending down, it is still at 99%. In summary, the news is good across the board. If you are a shareholder, it is less favorable if you are a traveler. Passengers are getting a little less for a lot more expense, US Airlines.
