There are reports that Aeroflot was hacked yesterday. The cyberattack destroyed 7,000 servers at Aeroflot. Operations have come to a standstill. 12TB of databases, 8TB of Windows Share files, and 2TB of corporate mail taken. Up to 200,000 passengers flew daily on Aeroflot during the summer.
This is significant damage, and the repercussions may go on for some time. Today, it is reported that another 50 flights have been cancelled.
To get an idea of the impact of such disruption, take a look at this model depicting four weeks of Aeroflot activity in 2024. The model lists countries, airports, and aircraft by total ground time (TGT). The map shows the number of flights over the period by location. Click on any name on the lists, and the data updates.
Western sanctions limit where the airline flies. Even so, Aeroflot has a significant footprint. The reports state 100 flights cancelled and others delayed. This impacted thousands of travelers.
The UK Telegraph reports Russians are traveling to the EU again. So those sanctions are being navigated successfully. Russians may not be flying on Aeroflot or direct flights, but they are getting around. North Korea welcomes Russians, too. However, the fleshpots of Pyongyang may pale in comparison to those of the EU.
