Moody’s assigns Baa3 rating to InterGlobe Aviation Limited
Meanwhile, Moody’s Ratings (Moody’s) has assigned a Baa3 long term issuer rating to InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo). The rating outlook is stable, Moody’s said in a statement.
“IndiGo’s Baa3 rating reflects its dominant market position in India’s domestic airline sector, cost competitive operations, strong financial metrics and excellent liquidity. At the same time, the rating incorporates IndiGo’s aggressive fleet expansion strategy for domestic and international business, aircraft groundings due to engine issues, near-term headwinds from the geopolitical landscape and its relatively short operating history,” says Nidhi Dhruv, a Moody’s Ratings Vice President and Senior Credit Officer.
“It will be cheaper (to raise funds) but it is not possible to specify exactly by what (percentage) …… but what is important it will us a wider access to different sources if financing …… with the world’s largest order IndiGo has 900 narrowbody and 30 widebody on order. For us it is important to make sure we have access to capital and continue to have access and with (this) rating clearly we have wider access,” Peiter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo said in a response to a question from AirInsight in a media briefing soon after the results were announced.

IndiGo to launch long haul flights from Mumbai in July
The airline also announced that it will fly between Mumbai and Manchester on July 1 and on the following day it will launch Mumbai-Amsterdam services. Both flights will operate three times a week. This flight will mark the entry of IndiGo into the long haul market from India.
In a departure from its existing practice not only is IndiGo to provide free meals to all its economy and Stretch class passengers but it also said that these meals will be hot. Till now IndiGo did not offer hot meals on any of its flights. Even on the Delhi Bangkok flight which is being operated with a leased Boeing 787 aircraft the meals are not hot. While economy class passengers have to pay for the meals the Stretch class passengers get free vegetarian meals and have to pay for a non-vegetarian meal at the moment. The Boeing 787 aircraft has been leased from Norse Atlantic Airways.
The Mumbai Manchester flight will operate on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with the return flight being operated on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Mumbai Amsterdam flight will operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and return to Mumbai on the same day.
In the announcement both flights “The food and beverages (alcoholic + non-alcoholic) will be complimentary for the IndiGo Stretch customers. While in economy, the meals and non-alcoholic beverages will be served on a complimentary basis, however the alcoholic beverages can be purchased on-board. The high-quality meals will be vegetarian by default, although an option to pre-book non-vegetarian meals will be available at the time of booking.”

“Fares to Amsterdam will obviously be lower than competition (KLM) flying on the route ….. Manchester is a new international route so fares are not being compared to competition,” Elbers said to the media in a telephonic media interaction on Wednesday.
In response to another question on how the closure of 32 airports in India affected the airline, the CEO said that the airline operated to 11 of the affected airports. “It is difficult to say what the loss is due to the closure of the airports which was for a little over a week. We had about 170 cancellations (of flights)…. Actually April started quite strong for the year but after the ceasefire traffic is returning,” he added.
With the outbreak of hostility between India and Pakistan earlier this month, the Indian authorities shut down operations of all Indian airlines to a number of Indian airports. (At least 10 Indian airports suspend flights |)
Elbers said that the closure of Pakistan airspace to Indian airlines had added about 20 minutes of flying time to its international flights adding that flights to Almaty and Tashkent which were suspended due to the closure of Pakistan airspace will be restarted once the airspace reopens.
The CEO added that the airline expected to have four Boeing 787 aircraft from Norse Aviation by the end of the calendar year. (IndiGo leases two more Boeing 787-9; totaling six |)
