Icelandair completed its acquisition of a 49% stake in Fly Play Europe Holdco (FPE) on August 20, paying $686,000 for a stake in the Maltese entity holding a European Air Operator Certificate. We flagged this deal back in April, when it was still a non-binding letter of intent. It’s worth returning to now that it’s closed, because the completed version reveals a detail the press-release language is stepping around.
That AOC — Malta registration MT-85 — is currently suspended, with no aircraft registered to it. Icelandair just paid for 49% of what is, right now, an empty shell.
