African carrier Air Algérie has got its hands on early deliveries of ten Boeing MAX 8s from as early as this July, by taking over slots originally intended for Brazil’s GOL. The latest order, which was announced by Algeria’s APS press agency on Thursday night, brings Air Algérie fleet renewal to 42 new aircraft.

The airline will take delivery of five MAX 8s this year, with the first joining in July. The remaining five will be delivered in 2027. The MAX 8s originally were part of a mix of orders from GOL for 148 MAX 8s and 9s. At the end of 2023, unfilled orders stood at 101, but this was reduced to 91 aircraft in April 2024 as part of GOL’s Chapter 11 restructuring. GOL exited Chapter 11 in June last year.

At the 2023 Paris Airshow, Air Algérie placed an order for eight MAX 9s (main picture), which had been an undisclosed order in the backlog since May that same year. Deliveries of these aircraft are to start in 2027. It also ordered two 737-800BCF converted freighters.

The MAX 9s were acquired to partially replace 737NGs. The current fleet includes 25 737-800s, five -600s, and two -700s. The 737-800s have an average age of 17 years, and the -600s are almost 24 years old. Fleet renewal will be accelerated with the arrival of the MAX 8s.

Airbus
In June 2023, Air Algérie also ordered five Airbus A330-900s and two A350-1000s. This order was revised in December 2024, when the airline swapped the A350s for three more A330-900s. Three aircraft have been delivered since November last year.

Just a few weeks after last year’s Paris Airshow, Air Algérie placed an order for 16 ATR 72-600s. Deliveries will run from 2026 to 2028. The aircraft will be operated by Domestic Airlines, a newly formed regional subsidiary of the parent airline. Air Algérie already operates 12 72-500s and three 72-600s.
