IndiGo, a Delhi-based low-cost airline, landed an aircraft at the new Noida International Airport (NIA) this afternoon (https://x.com/ANI/status/1866030607194812559?t=Ng7CCzbv94sY9ur92ImUiA&s=08). The landing of the IndiGo flight was part of the validation test for the new airport. The IndiGo flight verified the airport’s approach procedures, confirming the accuracy and functionality of its navigational aids and air traffic control systems. This crucial step demonstrates NIA's adherence to the stringent safety and operational standards required for commercial operations. Following the validation flight, NIA will finalize the needed documentation for aerodrome certification and submit it to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Incidentally, in November last year, the airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IndiGo, making the airline the inaugural or launch carrier for the new airport. The validation flight was conducted on an A320 to test the RNP (Required Navigation Performance) and ILS approach procedures. RNP is a set of navigation specifications that allow aircraft to fly precise flight paths with high accuracy. In October this year, the airport successfully calibrated the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI). A Beech King Air 360ER from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) began the calibration process on 10 October and concluded on 14 October 2024. Commercial operations at the airport are scheduled to begin by the end of April 2025. The first phase will feature one runway and one terminal, which can handle traffic of 12 million passengers annually. After completing all four development phases, the airport can cater to 70 million passengers annually. Joins a growing number of cities having two airports The airport, which is coming up on the outskirts of Delhi, is joining a list of cities in India that have or will have more than one airport serving them. In December 2022, Goa, a state in western India, opened its second airport, MOPA Airport. This airport is run by the GMR group, which operates in Delhi and Hyderabad. The group was also involved in an airport in Istanbul earlier and is building an airport in Cebu in the Philippines. Mumbai will also get a second airport when Navi Mumbai opens sometime next year. Navi Mumbai is run by the Adani group, the largest private sector operator of airports in India. It has at least eight operational airports, including the current airport in Mumbai. Airlines sign up The MoU between IndiGo and NIA will see the airport and airline collaborate to develop and strengthen air connectivity within Uttar Pradesh and beyond. The partnership will also explore new and innovative ideas to improve operational efficiency and enhance customer experience. In January this year, NIA partnered strategically with Akasa Air to support each other in their growth journeys. Akasa Air will base aircraft at NIA to operate domestic and international flights from the new airport, supporting the growing air travel demand in the region. Concessionaries on board In October this year, Schneider Electric formed a strategic partnership with the airport to introduce building and energy management solutions. Through this collaboration, Schneider Electric will roll out complete building management solutions, comprising Electrical SCADA and Advanced Distribution Management System, to significantly boost the airport's operational efficiency and sustainability. Schneider Electric's commitment to making airports sustainable involves providing innovative solutions to optimize energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and minimize the environmental impact. This includes integrating renewable energy sources, implementing intelligent building management systems, and deploying advanced automation and control technologies to enhance airport operations while reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Additionally, integrating various airport subsystems, such as Baggage Handling Systems and Passenger Boarding Bridges, will ensure a seamless, effective, and more productive operational environment. In the same month, it was announced that Honeywell Automation India Limited had secured a contract to provide the airport with its Airfield Ground Lighting system. This system will provide visual guidance to aircraft, increasing safety and streamlining operations across the tarmac. The following month, the airport announced its membership in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative. By joining UNGC, NIA reaffirmed its commitment to aligning its operations and strategies with the Ten Principles of the Global Compact, which focus on human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption practices. The airport also joins a global effort to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). NIA gets IATA Code In September 2023, the airport was given DXN as the IATA code. The airport will connect the greater Delhi area and Western Uttar Pradesh with other cities in India and the world. It claims to be the country's first airport in its class to achieve net zero emissions, setting a new standard for sustainable airport operations. Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) was established to develop, construct, and operate the greenfield project. The company, a 100 percent subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, is responsible for implementing the public-private partnership project in close partnership with the Governments of Uttar Pradesh and India. The concession period for Noida International Airport commenced on October 1, 2021, and will run for 40 years.
