The next Chief Executive Officer of the Delhi-based low-cost airline IndiGo will be Willie Walsh, the current Director General (DG) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). He is replacing Pieter Elbers .

Walsh’s name was cleared by the IndiGo board today, and he is expected to join no later than August 3 after demitting office as DG IATA on July 31. Before joining the global airline association, Willie was formerly CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group, a hold

Walsh has an association with India

It was during Walsh’s tenure as CEO of IATA that the annual meeting of the global airline club was held in Delhi, the Indian capital, in June 2025, after a gap of almost four decades since the last IATA meeting in India in 1983. Delhi had also hosted the IATA AGM in 1958, just a decade after India got Independence in 1947.

The 2025 IATA AGM came to India at a time when the Indian domestic aviation market is the world’s third-largest. It also came at a time when Indian airlines grabbed global headlines, leading the pack by ordering the most aircraft in a calendar year.

In June 2023, Indian airlines, including IndiGo, placed the world’s largest single-aircraft order for 500 Airbus A320 family planes. This was followed by an order in April 2024 for 30 Airbus A350-900s to expand their widebody fleet. Air India finalized an order for 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, subsequently increasing it by 100, bringing the total to 570, to modernize its fleet.

In January 2024, in conjunction with the state visit of the French President Emmanuel Macron to India, Akasa Air and CFM International announced today an agreement to purchase CFM LEAP-1B engines to power 150 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes, a sale that was announced the previous week. The agreement also includes spare engines and a services contract.

What the market feels about the Walsh appointment

Commenting on Walsh’s appointment, Satyendra Pandey, Partner at the Aviation leasing firm AaLC1, felt that, given the challenges Indigo faces, Willie Walsh brings a wealth of experience that is well aligned in many ways. AaLC1 is a mid-life focused aircraft leasing firm with a full suite of finance products.

“Whether it is the background of rising up from Operations to Management then consolidation via IAG and then leading the industry group IATA , all these will be critical” Pandey says.

He adds that “famously, Willie has dealt with unions and held his ground and effected transformation at more than one airline in spite of significant internal and external pressure, “ pointing out that most “importantly he is known to be very direct and forthright with his vision and execution and this will also help address issues of culture,”

The airline’s Chairman, Vikram Singh Mehta, said that Walsh’s experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics makes him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo toward continued growth in an ever-evolving, competitive international aviation environment.

Commenting on the appointment of Willie from a credit perspective, Siddharth Narkhede, Head of Airline Analysis, Ishka | Airfinance Global, said, If confirmed by regulators, Willie Walsh’s appointment as CEO will be a significant development for IndiGo, and we generally view this as a positive. “Willie Walsh has strong credentials and is one of the airline industry’s most successful executives having led, among others, British Airways and IAG for long periods and played a key role in their success stories.” Siddharth said.

He adds that, given his (Walsh’s) background with premium network airlines and his oversight of a diversified airline group like IAG, he appears well-positioned to lead IndiGo as it diversifies into long-haul premium segments.

“Nonetheless, he will take over at an important juncture. 2025 had been a relatively challenging year for all Indian airlines including IndiGo. Indian airlines have had to endure numerous exogenous challenges from war to airspace restrictions to currency volatility, just to name a few. IndiGo has also had to deal with a major operational challenge towards the end of 2025 which saw many of its flights cancelled and disrupted for a brief period. And just as it was recovering from that incident, the war in the Middle East will now add to the challenges from high fuel prices to currency pressures to potential revenue disruption from the Middle East, all of which could potentially strain earnings and cash flows in the near term. Positively though, IndiGo retains many strengths, including a strong balance sheet and robust liquidity, and is well-positioned to manage these challenges, “ a global aviation data, intelligence, and advisory business said.

Walsh’s distinguished career highlights commence from his role as a pilot, COO, and then CEO of Aer Lingus (2000-2005); CEO of British Airways (2005-2011); CEO of IAG (2011-2020); and, since then, the Director General of IATA (International Air Transport Association).

In his new role as IndiGo’s CEO, Mr. Walsh will be responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the airline, with a focus on transformational initiatives to strengthen operational performance, advance the Company’s network and commercial strategy, and enhance the customer experience. He will work closely with the Board and the leadership team to position IndiGo appropriately as it scales to the next phase of its growth.

Commenting on his appointment, Walsh felt that the airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision, and an exceptional reputation.
