In a smallish market, way to the South of the United States, there’s a pitch battle going on between Delta and United.  And United is winning. Competition between the two is tough.

In 2022 we shared a story called The Battle for Cape Town. The competitive cases brought before the US DOT for the few route authorities was unusually heated. After all, it’s a smallish market.

And here’s how its going.  The numbers reported show that United’s claims to the DOT court were good.

Not only that, but the focus on Cape Town was correct.

There’s more to it than just passenger traffic. Take a look at the freight market.

United is carrying more passengers and twice the freight.  United typically deploys 787-9s in this market against Delta’s A350-900s. The A350 is the larger airplane and should be carrying more traffic and cargo.

In terms of profitability per flight and the hot Cape Town leisure market, United’s dual-hub strategy, year-round commitment, and better Northeast feed give it a clear edge in 2025.
