With the global freighter fleet being the busiest out there, what does the data tell us about what is going on? It turns out the, based on US T-100 data, Boeing dominates this business segment with its dedicated freighters. Looking at the Top Ten freighter types on a pound per departure, the 747 is making a comeback rather than disappearing. In addition, the 777F is performing impressively as the highest payload carrier on a per-flight basis. The MD11 survives among these Boeings but its trend is going down.

Start My Test Flight →The chart above also shows that there is another segment among the Top Ten that falls into a category that is less than half what the Boeing’s and MD11 carry on a per-flight basis. Many of these aircraft are moving freight in their bellies as they are primarily passenger carriers. Â
As an example, below is what we see at United Airlines. On the left chart, we see that United started to grow its freight business again in 2013. Note the 777-300ER is doing well freight wise, while the 787-9 is carrying less freight. But the 787-10, 787-8, and the 767s are seeing more freight per flight.
