The national carrier, South African Airways, one of the world’s oldest, also went bankrupt and has been kept on life support by the taxpayer.
Based at the southern tip of the African continent, growth markets are to the north. And those markets are suffocated by state-owned airlines and a sense of protection of national champions. Yet, Qatar Airways invested in Airlink. Airlink has several codesharing agreements with foreign airlines. It’s the little airline that did rather than could.
