American airlines placed a major order for Embraer E175 and other aircraft last year.  The carrier has announced allocation of 78 of those aircraft to its subsidiaries Piedmont Airlines and Envoy Air.  These American Eagle operators will receive 45 and 33 of the new two-class 76 seat E175s with 12 business class and 64 main cabin seats, respectively.

Piedmont will take delivery of the E175 in 2008, with two class seating, high-speed satellite Wi-Fi, and power outlets at every seat.  The carrier will receive its first of the 45 new aircraft in the first quarter of 2028, and accept 1-2 aircraft per month for 36 months.

Piedmont’s CEO Eric Morgan said “Our more than 11,000 team members are the driving force behind everything we achieve.  Their dedication opens doors to opportunities like this, and we’re excited about what a new fleet type means for both our team and our customers.  More space, more comfort and more style, delivered by the best team in the business.”

“Piedmont proudly operates one of the industry’s most senior and most trusted fleets while maintaining a reputation for reliability and operational excellence.  This has resulted in Piedmont earning the title of most reliable E145 operator in the world in 2022, 2023 and 2024. And we look forward to doing the same with a new fleet type.”

Envoy Air will take delivery of its 33 additional E175s in 2026 and 2027, and already has new E175s scheduled for delivery this year.  By the end of 2027, Envoy will operate 171 E175s and 43 E170s.

Envoy Air CEO Pedro Fábergas said “As we remain focused on our Core Principles of Safety, Quality, and Cost Control, Envoy Air continues to grow strategically and sustainably – delivering value to our customers, employees and American Airlines Group shareholders.  This milestone reflects the dedication and hard work of our more than 21,000 employees across North America, the Pacific, the Caribbean and the Bahamas.”

The Bottom Line

As American finds itself falling behind Delta and United in business traffic, it is upgrading the experience for business travelers.  The E175 is much more comfortable than the E145s currently operated by Piedmont, and the addition of business class provides an option to attract premium business and leisure customers.  The new aircraft in the American Eagle fleet will help close the service level gap with American’s key competitors.
