Boeing 777-9 Dubai Airshow 2025
Boeing has quietly updated the technical specifications for all three variants of the 777X. The dedicated website includes new figures for range and cabin specifications that were not shared until recently. Boeing didn’t disclose the updates in a media release.
For instance, range for the first version to enter service – the 777-9 – has grown from 7.285nm (13.492km) to “up to 8.000nm (14.820km). This extension will likely be the result of performance testing under the Type Inspection Authorisation program of the FAA, which is now in Phase 4B, with only Phase 5 (ETOPS) to be completed. Certification is expected in early 2027.
Maximum take-off weight (MTOW) remains practically unchanged at 351.530kg from 351.550kg. Boeing now specifies seating capacity between 375 and 450 seats compared to an average of 426 seats shared previously.
777-8
Changes also apply to the 777-8, the smaller but more range-capable passenger version. Range was listed as 8.745nm (16.196km), but has now been extended to “up to 9.500nm (17.590km). This brings the Dash 8 very close to the 9.700nm maximum range of the Airbus A350-1000ULR that Qantas has ordered for nonstop Project Sunrise flights.
MTOW is slightly different at 365.140kg versus 365.150kg in the previous data sheet. Seating capacity comes at 350 to 425, compared to an average of 395 in the earlier specifications.
777-8F
Boeing has kept MTOW unchanged for the 777-8F freighter, of which the first aircraft is in final assembly. It is listed as 365.140kg. But the range has been extended to 5.000nm with a payload of 110 tonnes compared to the previous 4.400nm. The structural payload of 118 tonnes is unchanged.
The additional range offers customers more options to operate the type on longer routes or trade range for more seats. It also brings the 777X models closer to the A350, which, thanks to its lower structural weight, had an edge on range over the Boeing. At the same time, Airbus continues to update the A350. Since the entry into service of the first A350-900, Airbus has reduced the weight of the type by two tonnes and extended the range by 1.900nm.
