Here’s a simple three-pager tracking the duopoly from January 2000.

There’s a lot of chatter about how the A320 program just surpassed the 737.  This is a big moment for the industry.  But if you think that somehow Airbus has now developed some inexorable lead, think again.

To prove this, select the aircraft types on the menus and see how far ahead Boeing is in military, freighters, and twin aisles.  These segments may be less flashy but have delivered steady business for Boeing.  Airbus has a relatively small military presence, though its A330 MRTT is gaining significant traction.  Boeing is the king of freighters, and while the A350F shows promise, it must prove itself.  Boeing doesn’t have to prove anything in the freighter market.

The twin aisle market is a flagship territory. In this segment, Airbus demonstrates impressive progress in catching up.  Cumulatively, Boeing remains ahead, but the delays in the 777X program are having a negative impact.  The most recent news about a delay to 2026 was not positive. The 787 program hiccups have not been helpful, either.
