Today, KLM celebrated its E2 fleet. This image comes from the airline’s LinkedIn post.

Despite issues with the GTF, the airline cheers its E2 fleet. According to Embraer, the E2 models are the lightest aircraft operating the GTF and experienced the fewest groundings.
How does the E2 perform at KLM? Using Skailark‘s data, we developed the following chart.

There are a few points to make.
- The table on the left shows that the E195-E2 (aka ERJ190-400) offers a fuel burn equal to that of the 737-700 and close to that of the 737-800. Even though the 737s use a previous-generation engine, the E2’s competitive fuel burn with a much larger aircraft puts it at an advantage.
- The table also shows that the E2 burns 20% less fuel than the previous generation E1. KLM claims only 9% better fuel burn, which is very interesting. The 20% we find is not surprising; we see the same improvement levels between the A320ceo and A320neo families and the 737NG and 737MAX families.
- The improvement in fuel burn is manifest in the chart and highlighted by the red arrow. The E2 also offers considerably more range. Overall, the E2 is a substantially more efficient aircraft than its predecessor.
Embraer announced another important order with an influential customer this morning—more reasons to celebrate. It’s time for a Caipirinha. Saúde!
