This is accomplished by straightening the spiral staircase and creating additional cabin footprint within the aircraft. What do another 80 seats mean from an economic standpoint? The increase in seating translates to about an 11.5% improvement in seat-mile costs, with a very slight increase in aircraft-mile cost, accounting for the higher passenger load. This improvement takes the A380 from competitive with new technology aircraft into the lead, with an advantage over A350-1000 and 787-10 and 777-9 in seat-mile economics, as shown in the chart below. The change in economics is compelling and should give the A380 new life in markets with adequate traffic to fill 630 seats on a consistent basis. Therein lies the rub today, but with future traffic growth and congestion, we see the A380 as a necessary aircraft for key airports. Already LHR and HKG offer lower landing fee rates for the A380 because it reduces airport congestion. Many markets can already support the A380, as Emirates has so aptly demonstrated, and Emirates is already operating a 615-seat configuration in certain markets, such as the Indian subcontinent. The new interior configuration provides airlines additional flexibility. Could we see an A380 in higher density configuration between Tokyo and Honolulu, for example? The market will support such an operation, and therefore Hawaiian could be a potential customer for either new or used A380s. Certainly the JFK-LHR market, with 17 daily widebody frequencies, could support route consolidation with the A380. What will this do for A380 sales? First, it ensures that the aircraft has the lowest seat-mile cost of any airliner. For an airline that knows it can fill the aircraft, this becomes a compelling option, even with the high aircraft-mile costs. Second, it enables airlines to maximize slots at capacity constrained airports. Third, it brings the potential for higher density used A380s, with the new configuration installed, to be effective aircraft for long-haul low-cost operations to compete with smaller aircraft.
