Boeing confirmed two orders from Vietnamese carriers, underscoring the rapid growth of commercial aviation in the country.

The first order is for 50 MAX 8s from Vietnam Airlines. Actually, this order has been waiting for some time. It was first announced as a “commitment ” on September 11, 2023, during a state visit of then-President Joe Biden to Hanoi. The airline said in June 2025 that the order would be finalised “very soon”, but it was announced this Wednesday during a visit to Washington by government delegations.

Neither Boeing nor Vietnam Airlines disclosed delivery schedules, although the airline says that “this agreement also deepens the long-standing strategic partnership between Vietnam Airlines and Boeing, creating a strong foundation for our ambition to become a five-star international airline by 2030.” Fleet expansion is part of the carrier’s growth strategy until 2035.

Not in the Boeing press release but mentioned by Vietnam Airlines: “The airline also discussed plans to invest in 30 additional wide-body jets, with the total potential deal valued at over $12 billion — a major boost to its international expansion plans.” Vietnam Airlines already operates 11 787-9s and six -10s. Until the new order, it has no unfilled orders with Boeing.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways
Start-up carrier Sun PhuQuoc Airways also went shopping with Boeing and ordered up to 40 787-9s valued at $22.5 billion in list prices. The airline wants to operate the aircraft to destinations in Asia, Europe, and North America. It identifies Germany, the Czech Republic, France, and the UK as potential destinations. Australia, Japan, the Middle East, and former CIS countries should follow later.

Since receiving its AOC last August and launching services in November, the airline has used a hub-and-spoke model from Phu Quoc. The airline is owned by leisure group Sun Group, which plans to grow its fleet to around 100 aircraft by 2030. The current fleet comprises two Airbus A320neos, two A321ceos, and six A321neos, some of which are leased. It says that it will offer a five-star experience to customers, offering Business and Economy Class on board.

Boeing has unfilled orders from Vietnamese carriers for 201 aircraft, including 191 MAX from Vietjet and 10 787-9s from Bamboo Airlines. Vietjet also has 189 Airbus A321neos on order.
