Spanish airline Binter Canarias has confirmed it is the airline behind the undisclosed order for five Embraer E195-E2s that was announced earlier this week.
Binter Canarias already operates five E195-E2s since taking delivery of the fifth in June 2021. The order was announced during a media event on December 2. Binter will take delivery of two aircraft in November 2023, two in December, and one in April 2024. The order is valued at $389 million.
A crucial data point in the announcement is that four of the aircraft will be delivered in 2023. This is crucial because, among the OEMs, Embraer is in a position to deliver faster than competitors, although supply chain issues have resulted in a backlog of undelivered planes in Sao Jose dos Campos.
Embraer offers a solution in their largest model with fast delivery. This helps airlines because of the pressure from spiking fuel costs and a pilot shortage (accounting for ~75% of operating costs). The sub-150 seat market Embraer trades in is tough as they face off against Airbus. Where Airbus can’t deploy their A220/A321 combo, Embraer stands the best chance of a win. Winning deals is important, not just for Embraer to add to its order book. Every win demonstrates that the E2 is a viable solution and a competitive aircraft.
