Deutsche Aircraft unveiled the test prototype of the D328eco next generation turboprop at its Oberpfaffenhofen campus earlier today.  The D328eco is based on the Dornier 328 regional airliner, but with both increased passenger capacity and range.

D328eco

“The roll out of our first test aircraft marks a significant achievement in the D328eco program and an important step towards our physical flight test activities,” announced Nico Neumann, Co-CEO of Deutsche Aircraft. “This milestone represents our transition from conceptual design to practical testing and industrialization. At Deutsche Aircraft, we are proud to introduce an aircraft with the proven DNA of the Dornier 328, enhanced for better efficiency, reduced emissions and a superior customer experience, making it an optimal choice for regional operators worldwide.”

“This milestone is a testament to our team’s dedication and technical expertise,” added Olaf Lawrenz, COO of Deutsche Aircraft. “Building upon the robust foundation of the Dornier 328, an aircraft ahead of its time, we have integrated modern technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability. The roll out reflects our commitment to delivering a next-generation regional aircraft that combines proven reliability with cutting-edge advancements to meet the evolving demands of regional aviation.”

Marie-Christine von Hahn, Chief Executive Officer of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI), emphasized the significance of the roll out for the entire industry. “Innovations in the air improve our lives on the ground. Deutsche Aircraft is sending a strong signal on behalf of the entire industry: German aviation is a global leader.”

The Aircraft

Deutsche Aircraft characterizes the program as an “advanced evolution” rather than a clean sheet aircraft.  The aircraft is able to build on the strong features of the legacy model while delivering enhanced performance, improved fuel economy, an improved customer experience, and lower emissions.  The aircraft will retain the versatility and reliability of the existing model while innovating and decarbonizing the industry.

The aircraft will increase passenger capacity by 25 percent to 40 passengers, as well as increase maximum range to 1,205 nautical miles.  That will enable new air service between underserved markets with distances greater than 500 nautical miles.

The D328eco will also offer STOL capabilities, enabling service from runways as short as 3,550 feet and landing in 3,166 ft.  The aircraft will also be steep approach certified up to 5.5%, enabling operations at airports with difficult approaches such as London City.

Faster than most turboprops, the D328eco will have a long-range cruise speed of 324 knots and a cruising altitudes up to 30,000 ft.  With higher speeds, the aircraft can also replace 50 to 70 seat regional jets currently used in airline operations.

Next Steps

The aircraft roll out marks a significant step as Deutsche Aircraft is now ready to begin the testing phase that will lead to certification and entry into service during the fourth quarter of 2027.

The aircraft will be produced at the company’s final assembly line at Leipzig-Halle Airport.  Numerous key components will also be built at the former Dornier facility at Oberpfaffenhoffen.

With strong environmental performance, the ability to utilize 100% SAF, and more fuel efficient engines, the D328eco is well positioned to provide improved carbon and emission performance to a segment of the industry that has been relying on older technology.  We look forward to entry into service and a cleaner environment.
