Today’s Boeing news centers about potential Trump tariffs and trade with China. There are unknown factors at play, but the bottom line is that China will still need more lift than Airbus can supply, and US sourced parts will also be subject to tariffs, even on Airbus aircraft. This will be a complex element of trade negotiations, and rational behavior would keep mutually beneficial airplane deliveries going between the countries. We will soon see if rationality or emotions win on the trade front.
The DHL crash remains in the news, with Germany’s foreign minister suggesting the possibility of Russian sabotage. Teams from the NTSB, FAA and Boeing are on the way to assist in the accident investigation. Determining what happened may be difficult, but the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have apparently both been found. This one may take awhile to fully investigate, given the condition of the wreckage and serious injuries to the three crew members that survived.
A suggestion that Air India acquire the fleet of 10 787-8 aircraft that China Southern is offering for sale makes sense. Air India needs additional lift, and these still young and well maintained aircraft could help strengthen Air India’s fleet in the near term. With new aircraft in short-supply, this is a rare opportunity for Air India to avoid the long wait times.
Boeing has once again won a US tanker award, despite multiple level one failings for the aircraft. The deal will add $2.4 billion in backlog for Commercial Airplanes, which manufacturers the 767-200 derived tanker.
Finally, in environmental news, NASA, GE and Boeing are studying open fan design, a part of the RISE engine program that could provide game changing economics and environmental benefits. Solutions to the problems of noise, lower speeds, and protection from un-contained engine failures remain issues that may require some trade-offs in performance for environmental and economic benefits.
