ANA finalized a firm order with Embraer for 15 E190-E2 aircraft, with options for five more. The selection of the E190-E2 was announced in February, but the deal was just finalized at the Paris Air Show. Deliveries of the aircraft will begin in 2028, and ANA will be the first airline in Japan to operate the E2 series jets.
ANA had been looking for an alternative smaller aircraft since the demise of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet program, and selected Embraer over the Airbus A220-100. Embraer won the competition in the 100 seat segment.
Reaction to LOT selection of Airbus A220
The loss of the competition at LOT Polish Airlines, despite their strong history with the EJet family, was a disappointment to Embraer. Their statement on the decision follows:
“While we respect LOT Polish Airlines’ decision, we believe the E2 is the best aircraft for LOT from an economic and sustainability point of view. The E2 is 13% more efficient, and, unlike the larger competition, perfectly complements LOT’s 186 seat 737Max8s. The commonality with LOT’s current fleet would save millions of Euros on the transition to a new aircraft type.
However, we understand we are living in an exceptional moment where geopolitics play an important role. We remain committed to supporting LOT with our existing fleet and providing exceptional service. LOT has been a valued partner of Embraer, and we are proud of the strong relationship we have built over the years.
Embraer continues to innovate and advance in the aviation industry, with unprecedented growth in the commercial, defense and executive sector.”
The Bottom Line
Embraer has been competing against the duopoly, and is looking for a big win. Airbus is planning a substantial increase in the production rate for the A220 to levels that would normally be associated with a larger backlog. Airbus is clearly aiming at additional volume for its A220, with Embraer its major competitor. Â
Fortunately, the company remains quite successful in the defense sector with its C-390 as well as in the business jet sector with its Phenom and Praetor business jets families. Despite heavy competition in the commercial sector, Embraer continues to do well in the North American regional market with the E-175, and has a virtual monopoly on the 70 seat market.
Embraer is still in the game for several large decisions, including North American carriers regional fleet replacements, which are just now reaching replacement age. As the largest customers for regional aircraft, a couple of large orders could stabilize the E2 program. Stay tuned.
