Qatar Airways ordered an additional 20 Boeing 777-9 aircraft at Farnborough today, adding to its existing orders for 40 passenger 777-9 and 34 777-8 freighters. This brings the total orders to 94 777-X family aircraft for Qatar Airways. The 777-9 just began the flight testing and final phase of its certification program, which Boeing expects to complete by year-end 2025.
“Qatar Airways is proud to announce an expansion to the existing Boeing 777X aircraft order with an additional 20, totaling 94 Boeing 777X aircraft,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer. “We, as the World’s Best Airline, are an industry leader and operate one of the youngest fleets, offering unparalleled innovation and quality. Keeping an eye on the future, we continue to ensure that all Qatar Airways passengers are only met with the best products and services available in the industry.”
“Qatar Airways is a leader in our industry, and we are honored the airline added 20 more 777-9 jets to its large Boeing order book,” said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We appreciate their confidence that Boeing’s market-leading wide-body family will provide outstanding fuel efficiency and a superior passenger experience for its global operations.”
The need for replacement lift is critical for middle-eastern carriers, many of whom operate the Boeing 777 and are looking to the more fuel efficient 777-9 to replace 777-300ERs. With that program running late, airlines became hesitant to order not knowing when entry into service is likely. Boeing hitting the milestone of FAA certification flight earlier this month has renewed confidence that additional delays will be unlikely, generating orders for the 777-9.
