Today’s news about Boeing covers a crash of a cargo converted aircraft in Lithuania, the sale of non-core assets at Boeing, and a variety of interesting tidbits.
A DHL Boeing 737-400SF operated by SwiftAir crashed on approach to Vilnius, Lithuania, with one crew member dead. The aircraft was flying low on its approach, and less than one mile from the airport when the right wing dropped and the aircraft crashed and skidded into a building, after bursting into flames. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
Boeing could generate another $8 to $12 billion through the sale of non-core assets if Boeing trims its portfolio to focus on building airplanes. Jeppesen and Foreflight could yield $8 billion per a report from Jeffries. Other potential asset sales include ULA, a launch venture with Lockheed Martin, Argon ST, a C3I business, and insitu, an uncrewed vehicle business.
China Southern is looking to sell its fleet to 10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, but plans to maintain its fleet of 19 787-9 models. It is difficult to discern whether this is a strategic decision to move away from Boeing or to acquire more of the larger models. Time will tell, but it is unusual to see an airline sell off an entire sub-fleet.
With Emirates taking delivery of its first Airbus A350, can Airbus exploit Boeing’s weaknesses competitively? We analyze that potential in a story by Addison Schonland here at AirInsight.
Rolls-Royce, whose Trent 1000 problems have caused airlines to switch to GEnx engines on 787s, believes their problems are now behind them, and that they can revive sales of the beleaguered engine program. After several airlines decided to switch engines, the key question is whether Rolls-Royce can win back their confidence.
Finally, it appears Boeing wants to drive production upward at Charleston, applying for permits for facility expansion. Explansion plans indicate creating ability to double the production rate from 5 to 10 per month by late 2026.
