News coming out of the UK indicates that Irish carrier Ryanair will introduce Standing Room Only seating on its 737-800 aircraft next year, using an innovative “standing seat” that enables a passenger to be belted into a standing position on a support.  For a charge of only £5 per flight, standing room could become the least expensive way to fly.
While these new seat arrangements will require certification, safety testing is scheduled for next year and Ryanair has consulted with Boeing on the concept. Â An article in the Telegraph that is accessible below includes a video showing the potential standing room seats.
As long rumored, Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary is also expected to announce a £1 (about $1.50US) charge to use the restrooms on the aircraft, adding new meaning to the phrase “pay as you go.”
