Grupo Aeromexico and the Cross Border Xpress at Tijuana International Airport have just announced a new commercial product. This will Aeroméxico to improve its connectivity to the US via Tijuana. Improving Aeromexico’s connectivity in Tijuana to the US On Sunday, Aeromexico announced that it will add an IATA code ‘TJX’ for passengers flying between Mexico City and Tijuana who want to enter the United States. The new product will be available starting in November 2021, said the airline in a statement. Initially, the new commercial feat will be available only through Aeromexico’s website. Nevertheless, towards the end of the year, it will also be available on Aeromexico’s app and other digital channels and travel agencies. Having a virtual CBX pass will save travelers time while entering the United States. Andrés Castañeda, CMO and CXO at Aeromexico, stated, “We want our customers to have the best trip experience. Therefore, we are investing in this alliance with the CBX so the border cross between Tijuana and San Diego becomes more agile and comfortable for our clients that travel on the more than four hundred trips we have monthly between Mexico City and Tijuana.” Meanwhile, Jorge Goytortúa, general director at CBX, said, “We are excited to be able to provide our mutual passengers with Aeromexico this technological implementation that will add value to their trips. Now, by using the TJX code when buying, the passengers will have a simpler process because they won’t have to buy their CBX ticket as an additional service.” What’s the CBX? The Cross Border Xpress is one of the biggest success pillars of Tijuana International Airport. It is a pedestrian bridge that connects the airport with San Diego, California. Passengers coming by air both from Mexico and the US can connect with the other country while taking advantage of a kind of domestic travel. That’s why Tijuana International Airport can be graded as a binational airport (even though it isn’t). Currently, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexico and US ground borders have some travel restrictions. For instance, Mexican travelers can’t cross from Mexico to the US via the CBX (US citizens can). It is expected that both governments will lift the restrictions by the end of the year, but there’s no announcement so far. Additionally, the US recently announced new travel rules that could impact Mexican travelers. The country decided that everyone must be vaccinated before entering the US. Before that change, Mexican travelers could enter the US despite their vaccination status, which will now change. Moreover, the US is yet to announce which vaccines it will allow and which not. Many Mexican citizens have received COVID-19 shots from Sputnik V, AstraZeneca (not authorized by the FDA), among others. A glimpse at Tijuana International Airport’s rebound Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Tijuana International Airport is already showing the best numbers in its history. In July 2021, the airport received 918,137 passengers, according to stats provided by the Mexican Government. That number is a 10.6% increase compared to July’s 2019 numbers. Two out of the five most important domestic routes in Mexico at the moment include Tijuana International. So far, Tijuana International Airport has received 5.2 million passengers. It is Mexico’s fourth most important airport, surpassing Monterrey International, a traditional business hub in the country’s north. Finally, in terms of flights and seats offered, Tijuana is already well over 2019 levels. In October 2021, Tijuana will have 17.2% more frequencies and 16.5% extra capacity compared to a couple of years ago, per Cirium’s database. Volaris is Tijuana’s leading airline.
