JetSMART began its expansion in Peru |

This week, JetSMART began its expansion in Peru by start selling domestic flights in the South American country. Peru is the third country in Latin America where it operates domestically. It already flies in Chile and Argentina. Peru, JetSMART’s next country JetSMART’s expansion in Peru has been in the making since last year. The airline saw an opportunity to bring its low-cost model to the South American country and compete with Sky Airline, LATAM, and ATSA. Nonetheless, unlike the other airlines flying in Peru, JetSMART will not focus on serving exclusively from Lima International Airport (LIM). Instead, it will focus on secondary cities, avoiding the saturation levels seen in Lima. JetSMART will offer 13 routes, including four interregional routes that will not go through Lima. With these 13 new routes, people will be able to access faster trips at a lower cost. The JetSMART routes that connect with Lima are Arequipa, Cusco, Piura, Trujillo, Tarapoto, Talara, Juliaca, Iquitos and Cajamarca, in addition to four SMART routes, flights that connect cities throughout the country without passing through Lima: Arequipa-Cuzco, Arequipa-Trujillo, Arequipa-Piura and Arequipa-Tarapoto. Estuardo Ortiz, JetSMART Airlines CEO, said, "Flying SMART is now possible within Peru. Everyone will be able to fly in a new, safe, and on-time aircraft, saving many hours of ground travel and at ultra-low prices. SMART routes will contribute to increasing productivity and decentralization in the country, saving time and money for all our passengers. This is a great step toward bringing the dream of flying closer to everyone, increasing the country's connectivity without the need to go through the capital. We will offer shorter point-to-point flights to destinations that today are not connected to each other, allowing great transfer opportunities for passengers who from now on will pay only for what they need and use for their trip.” High ambitions Last year, JetSMART signed an agreement with American Airlines. The US carrier will heavily invest in the Chilean low-cost carrier. Moreover, JetSMART has an ambitious fleet plan. It has a purchase order for 124 new Airbus aircraft and a vision of carrying 100 million passengers by 2028. It currently has operations in six countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, and Chile, with more than 60 routes throughout South America. It connects Chile's capital, Santiago, with the cities of Lima, Arequipa, and Trujillo. In Peru, the airline will use the Airbus A320neo, benefiting from a 20% less fuel consumption and a reduction of almost 50% in its acoustic footprint.
