Colombia’s El Dorado To Increase Its Capacity

The Colombian Civil Aviation authorities have given authorization to Bogota’s International Airport to augment the number of flights per hour it can have. Colombia’s El Dorado to increase its capacity, going from 47 operations every sixty minutes to 65. Nevertheless, there’s too much to do still. El Dorado’s capacity: 65 operations per hour Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, El Dorado International Airport had a capacity of 74 flights per hour. Due to the crisis, the Colombian hub shut down for several months and has been slowly reopening. On October 30, Aeronáutica Civil (Colombia’s Civil Aviation authorities) stated that the operational capacity of Bogota’s Airport would go from 47 flights per hour to 65. The hub is now having 28 landings and 37 departures every hour. Aeronáutica Civil added, “This means that El Dorado now has recovered 88% of the capacity it had in 2019 when it operated 74 flights every hour, and shows once more the success of the airline industry reactivation in the country, which is leading this process in Latin America.” Aeronáutica Civil expects El Dorado’s increase of operations will help Colombia to reach a milestone. The plan is to have 30 million passengers by the end of the year throughout the country. In the first nine months of the year, Colombia had 20 million passengers; 16 million of them came through Bogota’s Airport. New routes Colombia has been trying to capitalize on the recovery in the last few months. The country has approved many new domestic and international routes. According to a press statement by Aerocivil, it has authorized over 80 new routes (most of them international). Additionally, three new airlines are finishing their certification process to enter the Colombian market. For instance, the Colombian low-cost startup Ultra Air has just recently shown its first new plane in an Instagram post. Ultra Air is aiming to start operations in 2021’s first quarter, connecting firstly domestic destinations and then going international. Key Colombian carriers like Avianca, LATAM, and Viva have been launching new routes throughout the year. Viva doubled its international reach by adding routes to Cancun, Mexico City, and Orlando. Avianca announced 23 new international routes in August; 13 departed from Colombia. LATAM filed permission with Aeronáutica Civil to operate five new domestic routes. How’s Colombia’s passenger recovery going so far? Colombia is one of the few countries in the world not to have any travel restrictions whatsoever. This has allowed the country to have a quicker recovery than anyone else. Despite that, three carriers with Colombian AOCs (Avianca, LATAM, and EasyFly) are in some sort of financial reorganization. According to Aerocivil, up to September, Colombia has had 19.8 million passengers in 2021, domestically and internationally. Compared to 2019 levels, Colombia has recovered 65.3% of its pre-pandemic traffic numbers. Nevertheless, if we only compare September numbers between 2019 and 2021, we see that Colombia’s recovery is going stronger. In September 2021, Colombia had 2.8 million passengers, an 82.53% recovery compared to its pre-pandemic stats. It will be challenging for Colombia to get to 30 million (as it is the plan); nevertheless, the country is recovering quite well from the COVID-19 pandemic. Most likely, it will fully bounce back in terms of passenger traffic next year.
