Mexicana de Aviación - Mexico's New Flag Carrier Reborn

In a significant move, the Mexican government has unveiled its plans for a new flag carrier, the revival of the Mexicana de Aviación brand, set to begin operations this December. However, this announcement has raised questions about the viability of the routes, potential market inequalities, and the true impact on existing carriers. The revival of the iconic Mexicana de Aviación brand, following its bankruptcy in 2010, signifies the Mexican government's commitment to the aviation sector. Under the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration, this endeavor is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Mexico's position in the global aviation market. The government's acquisition of the brand and its commitment of approximately $235 million in funding demonstrates the seriousness of this endeavor. Mexicana de Aviación will be based at Mexico City’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport. The fleet for the new Mexicana de Aviación will consist of ten Boeing 737-800 aircraft, each with a capacity to accommodate 180 passengers in a single-class configuration. The first three aircraft are scheduled to arrive on September 30, followed by the remaining planes on October 30. Choosing Boeing as the primary aircraft supplier underscores the government's emphasis on modern, efficient, and reliable aircraft for the new carrier. Routes announced The initial routes announced for Mexicana de Aviación encompass 20 domestic destinations, including popular cities such as Cancun, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. However, we have concerns about the viability of these routes, given that they are already well-served by existing carriers like Aeromexico, Volaris, and Viva Aerobus. Data indicates that these routes collectively offer 1,660 weekly flights and nearly 300,000 available seats from Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) as of August 2023. One of the government's key claims is that Mexicana de Aviación will offer fares approximately 20% cheaper than those of commercial carriers. While this announcement might be welcomed by travelers, it has also sparked concerns. The existing taxes, such as the Airport Use Tax (TUA), can significantly impact ticket prices. However, the more affordable TUA rates at Felipe Ángeles International Airport compared to MEX could indeed contribute to cost savings. Nonetheless, the government's close involvement in administering both the new carrier and the Felipe Angeles and Tulum airports raises questions about competition fairness in the industry. Some aviation experts worry that this level of government intervention could lead to market inequalities and potentially favor Mexicana de Aviación over private companies operating under similar circumstances. It remains to be seen how Mexicana will navigate the complex aviation landscape, differentiate itself from existing carriers, and address concerns about market competitiveness.
