Luxair grows future MAX fleet with Embraer E195-E2s

Luxemburg’s national carrier Luxair continues its fleet renewal. After announcing orders for the Boeing MAX in recent months, the carrier today said that it has placed a firm order for four Embraer E195-E2s. The first aircraft will be delivered in Q4 2025. Luxair has also secured options for two more aircraft, plus purchase rights for another three. It has conversion rights to opt for the smaller E190-E2 if it wishes to do so. CEO Gilles Feith says in a media statement that the Embraers have been the best choice: “The E195-E2 has both the lowest noise and fuel burn in the regional aircraft market and will provide needed flexibility in our network. Our passengers will benefit from the spacious and quiet cabin and big overhead hand luggage bins. The E195-E2 is a great fit for Luxair and our passengers.” The airline currently operates two E190s on lease from German Airways. Between April 1997 and March 1999, Luxair had three EMB-120s in the fleet. Between April 1999 and October 2016, Luxair operated eleven ERJ-135s and -145s. “It’s great to welcome Luxair back to the Embraer Family,” said Embraer Chief Commercial Officer Martyn Holmes. “The E2 is perfectly suited to Luxair’s operations and ambitions, closely complementing Luxair’s existing and on-order fleet, ensuring the maximum level of fleet and network optimization to the airline for the long-term. The E2’s special power is that its new technology, low noise, and environmental footprint, make it possible for airlines to manage both their growth and sustainability goals.” Fourth fleet announcement this year The Embraer order is Luxair’s fourth fleet announcement this year. In June at the Paris Airshow, the carrier placed a firm order for four Boeing MAX 7s, becoming the first customer for the type in Europe. In March, Luxair already ordered two MAX 8s for delivery in Q1 2026. The airline has also leased two MAX 8s from Pembroke, of which the first joined in June and the second in September. The leased aircraft will likely be replaced by two MAX 8s that were ordered in April for delivery in 2027. The MAX will eventually replace four 737-700s and -800s. Back in June, Gilles Feith said: “We continue to invest in Luxair’s growth and this agreement for four Boeing 737-7 is an extra step towards securing a long-term future for our national airline. This type of aircraft is a perfect match for Luxair and will meet the requirements of the market. Seating 160 passengers, the 737-7 will offer flexibility across the Luxair destination network while significantly reducing fuel consumption.” The Embraer E195-E2s will complement the Boeings with a seating capacity of up to 150. Luxair also operates a fleet of eleven De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s on regional routes. Luxair reported a €1.5 million operating profit for 2022 compared to a €-30.7 million loss in the previous year.
