Having the fuel approved is the easier part, the tougher part is getting distribution nationwide. California is the most crucial since “some municipalities have prematurely banned the sale of leaded avgas“. The progress made thus far wasn’t a foregone conclusion, as AvWeb noted as recently as July. In May this year, the EPA announced “evaluate whether emissions from piston-engine aircraft operating on leaded fuel contribute to air pollution that endangers public health and welfare.”
This is big news for the general aviation segment. As commercial aviation moves towards its net zero goals far off in the future, it is great to see that general aviation is also working towards solutions that improve the environmental impact fo flight.
