Chile’s Sky Airline Looks To Enter The US Market |

The Chilean ultra-low-cost carrier Sky Airline has filed a request to the Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate non-stop flights from Chile to the United States. Entering the US market Sky Airline intends to initially serve the US market on flights to and from the United States operated by Sky’s controlled affiliate, Sky Airline Peru. But in the future, the Chilean branch of the company also intends to operate from Chile “upon its receipt of aircraft with the range necessary to do so on a nonstop basis.” The Chilean-founded company currently has an order for ten Airbus A321XLRs, which would allow the airline to fly nonstop from Santiago de Chile to destinations such as Miami without using a widebody aircraft. Sky and other Chilean companies, such as JetSMART and LATAM Chile, have ordered the XLR and have hinted at the United States as their main goal with the long-range single aisle jetliner. Sky Airline is scheduled to become the first Latin America-based operator of the XLR. Currently, Sky Airline holds a fleet of 28 Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. In their attachment to the DOT, the airline did not expressly state which destinations it would like to serve from Peru and Chile. Sky Peru currently flies daily from Lima to Miami. Entering the market as an ULCC The market between Chile and the United States has 51 weekly flights and 13,849 seats available as of December 2023. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, LATAM Airlines, and United Airlines operate flights between both countries, all employing long-haul widebody jets. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the most used airplane on routes between these two countries. American Airlines flies daily to Santiago de Chile from Dallas Fort Worth, and Miami on each route. Delta flies from Atlanta daily as well. LATAM Airlines –a close partner to Delta– operates three routes from Santiago, flying daily to New York JFK, five times a week to Los Angeles, and 11 flights per week to Miami. Finally, United Airlines flies daily from Houston to the Chilean capital city. What can we expect onboard Sky’s A321XLRs? LATAM offers the largest amount of weekly seats, with 6,506, or averaging 282.9 per departure. The Airbus A321XLR is set to have a typical two-class seating of between 180 and 220 seats, although it can be stretched to 244 passengers in a one-class configuration. Most likely, Sky Chile will put the capacity for its A321XLRs on the dense side of the spectrum. The airline’s A321neos currently have a capacity for 238 passengers, one of the densest cabins for A321neos globally (on its website, Airbus states the A321neo comfortably seats 180 to 220 passengers in a typical two-class interior layout, and as many as 244 in a higher-density arrangement).
