Today’s key news focuses on the flawed 787 parts made public through an Italian prosecution that happened three years ago. While Boeing, Leonardo, and impacted airlines knew of the problem, the new media were in the dark about yet another “quality escape.”
The economic impact of the Boeing strike was compared by the Oxford Economics to that of Hurricane Helene – extremely significant for the US and global economy. The significance of the strike, coming after a major hurricane and with another on the way, could impact US GDP in the fourth quarter, as well as the November jobs report, with 33,000 employees who could still be out of work.
India’s DCGA, their equivalent of the FAA, is acting on the defective rudder control after an urgent warning from the US National Transportation Safety Board. The regulator has banned low visibility Category IIIa landings for the Boeing 737NG and Boeing 737MAX with the potentially faulty part. The question now is why have foreign regulators once again been faster to act than the FAA? That agency should move quickly and with an abundance of caution, rather than delaying actions. The US was the last major agency to ground the MAX, and apparently will also follow the international regulators on this rudder issue as well.
United has signed a lease deal with BOC Aviation for four aircraft, three 737MAX and one 787-9 aircraft. The leasing companies with availability in their delivery skylines will have little problem in finding customers for those positions as the duopoly players struggle to ramp production rates.
LATAM airlines has become the first operator in the Americas for Lufthansa Technik’s AeroShark aircraft film that improves fuel economy. LATAM is joining most of the LH Group carriers, including Swiss and Lufthansa, which are retrofitting Boeing 777s with the technology.
