A new data source offers a fresh view of US International travel

This new source is called the I-92. Look here to understand what is behind this source. I-92 data are obtained electronically from U.S. and foreign flag carriers operating international arrival or departure flights to and from the United States (Canada is included as of 2011). The Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens, and non-citizens. The key advantages of the APIS source for anyone tracking international traffic into and out of the United States are a census of traffic rather than a sample, faster processing, and data at the daily level. This is a level of detail you won’t find at the DoT. Looking at traffic departing the United States for 2023 through June, the chart lists the top ten airports. To understand the market, the top ten airports account for 8-9% of monthly traffic. When we look at hubs, these account for 93% of the traffic. This is an important point. If there’s one thing every community wants, it's more air service, and international air service is the most attractive. Attracting international air service is a difficult task. Winning service is a great way to boost a local economy. Every airport wants this. When combined with the Survey of International Air Travelers, the APIS data offers insights. Combining these sources provides a volume, plus the true origin and destination. US Outbound Traffic The APIS data shows interesting trends – whereas the market bounces around 50% share for traffic by nationality, in June and July, the outbound US traffic surges to over 60% share. The US outbound traffic is not as monolithic as one might expect. While network airlines carry most of the traffic, the LCC segment hovers around the mid-teens in share. This share will grow as LCCs and ULCCs acquire longer-range aircraft such as the A321LR. These two segments already account for one in five US outbound travelers. Moreover, the US outbound market grew substantially from June to June at nearly 19%. And when we peel back the numbers into world regions, we see this for outbound US citizens traffic. For any American visiting Europe this summer, this sharp rise in traffic is no surprise. Americans were all over the EU this summer. The APIS data also shows the dominance of US carriers in the market to Europe. US-based carriers routinely have a market share of more than 50% - dropping below parity in December and January and peaking in July and August. The APIS data source is the first official government data to confirm that the phenomenal growth in U.S. citizens traveling internationally in 2023 was primarily felt on EU routes and benefiting US carriers.
