DAE completes placement of 12 MAX with Aeromexico

Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) announced on January 19 that it has successfully completed the placement of 14 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, including 12 with Mexican carrier Grupo Aeromexico. The order was placed with Boeing in April last year. Icelandair will receive the other two MAX units. DAE Completes Placement Of 737 MAX In Aeromexico. Last year, Aeromexico modified its original order with Boeing for B737 MAX units as part of its Chapter 11 proceedings in the United States. As a recap: Aeromexico had an original order for 60 B737 MAX -8s and -9s. When the pandemic started in 2020, Aeromexico had only received six MAX units and had unfilled orders for 54 aircraft. Then, Aeromexico filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 30, 2020. The bankruptcy process put a question mark on Aeromexico’s order, as the airline struggled to cope with the increasing debt and lower demand. In the end, Aeromexico agreed with Boeing to halve its unfilled orders from 54 MAX. Instead, it would receive 20 MAX, four B737-800s, and four 787 Dreamliners. In the meantime, Aeromexico also entered into an agreement with lessors like Dubai Aerospace Enterprise to receive new MAX units. Both parties agreed to lease 12 MAX 8 aircraft. The deliveries Last year, Aeromexico had received six Boeing 737-800s, six MAX 9s, and four B737-800s up to the end of the third quarter. It had a fleet of 122 aircraft and was expected to close the year with 125 planes. Regarding Aeromexico’s deal with Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, today the UAE-based company said: “Deliveries commenced in October 2021, and all aircraft are scheduled to be delivered before the end of the first half of 2022.” Firoz Tarapore, Chief Executive Officer of DAE, said in a media statement: “We are very pleased to see the pace of recovery in air travel and the associated demand for this new technology, fuel-efficient aircraft. We thank Aeroméxico and Icelandair, both long-term customers of DAE, for their ongoing trust in DAE and wish them much success with their new fleet additions.” Aeromexico’s current fleet At the end of the third quarter, Aeromexico had a fleet of 122 aircraft. It was composed of: B787 - 18 B737-700 - 5 B737-800 - 36 B737 MAX 8 - 10 B737 MAX 9 - 6 E190 - 47 According to Planespotters, Aeromexico currently has nineteen MAX 8s, of which two have been leased from DAE since November. The other aircraft have been sourced from SMBC Aviation Capital and Jackson Square. By 2025, the airline aims to have 154 aircraft, according to its Chapter 11 plan. Its fleet would be composed of 133 narrowbodies and 21 widebodies. The two additional MAX for Icelandair will be delivered this spring. They bring the MAX fleet to fourteen. DAE has ten MAX remaining on order from the fourteen ordered in April 2021. Its fleet includes thirty MAX 8s as some have been purchased through a sale and leaseback.
