Unionized workers in Mirabel reject Airbus offer

In a vote Sunday, unionized Airbus workers in Mirabel rejected Airbus second contract offer to workers building the A220, nee Bombardier CSeries.  Airbus had been holding talks with the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace workers (‘IAM’) over the last three weeks since their first contract offer was rejected by the Airbus A220 plant workers.

Airbus stated that the bargaining table dialog has been “open and constructive” and submitted the new and improved offer late last month.  The company also stated that a gap remains between the union’s demands and the current economics of the A220 program, which has not yet reached breakeven.  Airbus

indicated that it remains committed to the collective bargaining process, and will be back to the table.

Airbus has publicly stated that it plans to raise A220 production rates from the current 6 per month to 14 per month by 2026.  That would dramatically increase narrow-body production (mostly in Mirabel) and help ease the current aircraft shortage in the industry.  But the problem for Airbus is the high cost of the A220.
