Rolls-Royce has met the target of running the UltraFan technology demonstrator at full power before the end of this year. The engine maker said in a pre-Dubai Airshow release that the test has been completed successfully at the Testbed 80 in Derby, but didn’t specify when this was done.
UltraFan started ground tests on April 24, which was only publicly announced in May. During a pre-Paris Airshow media briefing in Dahlewitz near Berlin in June, Simon Burr, Director of Engineering & Technology, explained that Rolls-Royce was taking a step-by-step approach to testing.
“We are taking our time running up the power in the engine, as we obviously want to make sure we learn as we go. We are cautious but we will continue to push the envelope. UltraFan reached its mid-power. Idle fan speed is in the sort of mid-20s, we are well under 60 percent. We are running it about three times a week and are incrementing up,” said Burr in June. In October, Burr has been promoted to lead the integrated Engineering & Technology and Safety department.
